[From neighbourhood watch midlands] We have been advised by one of our neighbours that they received a Cold-Call yesterday morning by man who said he was from a "Home Improvements" firm and said that they were in the HR1 area and saw "on their database" that the neighbour had "the old-fashioned fiberglass insulation". At that point, the neighbour said their usual "no thanks, goodbye!" and hung up. The neighbour checked afterwards to see what the number was (they don't have a 'Caller ID Display' phone). The number turned out to be a Bournemouth number, specifically 01202 084085 and when this was later checked, turns out to be a company called Airtight Renewables Ltd (also known as ATR Bournemouth Ltd). When checking the company website, there is no Energy 'renewables' involved, only Icynene Spray Foam Insulation. In doing further checks on the number along the lines of 'who called me from this number', it turns out that there have been at least 10 complaints about this number cold-calling since the 13/02/18. The calls have often been quoted as becoming aggressive when asked to stop calling or that they shouldn't be calling as the resident is registered with TPS etc. The callers can be male or female and when questioned as to who they are, company name etc, both the males and females invariably become aggressive and start shouting and swearing, especially when informed that the resident is going to report their call to the ICO (Information Commissioners Office). 'Lucy' is one of the names used by a female caller. They often claim to be the 'energy advisor for the area' and/or try to give the impression that they are authorised by local government and that 'normal' loft insulation is not as good as their product! Advice from the independent Energy Saving Trust is, that if you have a loft that is insulated in the usual way above the ceiling, then you should NOT also insulate the pitched roof with spray foam. The foam will have negligible effect on heat loss, and increase the risk of moisture collecting in the roof timbers, which in turn increases the chances of rot and decay. If you need to increase the amount of insulation then add further layers of the existing material at ceiling level. “This is the cheapest and most effective way to insulate a loft,” says the Trust. There are numerous stories in the National Press and across the internet of horror stories of people being ripped off for thousands of pounds for Spray Foam Insulation. This is what many companies that extol the virtues of Spray Foam Insulation are doing. Spraying the underside of your pitched roof in the attic/loft DESPITE the fact that you have NORMAL ceiling insulation between the horizontal ceiling joists (which is against the BBA certificate for that product). If you are at all thinking of having Spray Foam Insulation work carried out in your attic/loft space, the advice is to consult an independent Buildings Surveyor before hand.

Someone called Eloise called claiming to be from a local energy conservation company and tried to start telling about changes to building regulations. Told her that my number is registered with the TPS and when she claimed her system didn't say that told her that's irrelevant as it's their responsibility to check the register. Informed them if they phone again I'll report it to the ICO.
