I received an email informing me that a BACS payment of £448.94 had been arranged for me. They quoted a false BAC reference and included an attachment which was supposed to be a remittance advice. The attachment was opened and was in fact a blank page in Microsoft Excel. The email was signed by a Sheryl Dennis who stated her title in the company as 'Senior Accounts Payable Specialist'. I did not call the telephone number on the email, which I was told could be used for any queries, but did call a UK based company who trade under a very similar name. It seems that they had received a number of calls from other people who had also received the same email. She explained to me that they had discovered that the emails are sent from a country outside of the UK and they are scams and should be deleted. Immediately after opening the email and attachment, I ran a virus check on my PC which did not find any viruses present. I also informed my bank.
